PAUL SIMPSON ON THE WORKINGTON FRENDLY

PAUL SIMPSON

We spoke to manager Paul Simpson following the 0-0 draw with Workington.

On the result, he began by saying: “I mean, it's an extension of training. That said, I think the signs are there that there's still lots of improvements to be made in terms of the technical side of it.

"I thought we were a little bit sloppy, we were a little bit slow on the ball. We didn't move it as quick as I wanted us to. What I will say is it was a good physical workout for them at the end of what has been quite a tough week for them, because it is pre-season.

"We went more for intensity as opposed to volume in the last week. So, I'm quite sure there were some tired legs. So, it's good in that respect that they've had that extra time out on the grass today.

"But also, I've just said to them there, there's obvious signs there that there's still improvements that need to be made”

We asked if he felt there was any concerns with the performance, he responded:

“No, not at all, no. No, I think the way they've gone about it in the first two games, the way they've gone about it in training, I've been really impressed with.

"And I'm pleased with where we are. It's about trying to keep everybody fit. A little bit of a concern that we've got Cameron Harper's come off with a little bit of a tight groin there. We're hoping it's not too bad.

"But it really is just about getting minutes in the legs, getting fitness in them, learning about different things and making sure we keep the organisation right. So, there were some good things out there.

"But obviously, you want to see some goals going in and we didn't get that today.”

On Cameron Harper, Simpson explained:

“He just said every time he struck a ball, he just felt a bit of tightness. So, we don't want to stretch anybody at this stage.

"We've still got weeks before the start of the season. So, it's important that we try and keep everybody out on the grass. We'll assess him, we'll see how he is.

"But the pleasing thing is I don't think there was any other injuries that came out of today. We're another game under our belts and hopefully we can keep going.”

Charlie Wyke came off at half time, we asked if that was part of the plan, to which Simpson responded:

“It was, yeah. Cameron Harper was only going to play 45 minutes. Him and Taylor were supposed to swap at half-time and Luke and Charlie were going to swap.

"So, that was no problem at all. It's the planning ahead of who needs the minutes, where they're going to get the minutes in. And the next stage will be Friday night at St Mirren as well.

Georgie Kelly was absent today, Simpson discussed his situation, saying:

“He's coming along really well. He's going to drop into some football sessions next week.

"And he'll get some game time further. We fully expect him to be fit for the start of the season. But we've just got to be careful with it.

"He's looking really good in training in terms of the work he's doing. But we've just got to make sure we get it right.”

Simpson then spoke about Callum Guy’s recovery, stating:

“He's been doing work out on the grass. He's got a bit of a deficiency in the muscle strength between the left and right side. There's too big a gap at the moment.

"So, we're going to have to be patient with him. It's probably not going to be September. It's probably going to be October, I would imagine.

"But we'll see how he goes. He's going well. It's just that difference between the left and right side that we need to try and get that gap a little bit closer. And that's just perfectly normal with this type of injury, to be honest.”

The team travel to St. Andrews next week, Simmo chatted about that, saying:

“It's a case of living together for the week. We've got lots of work on the grass, but lots of work in the meeting room as well around team building, about personalities, about learning about each other.

"And hopefully it'll be a really big week for us. We're very fortunate that we're able to go away and have a change of scenery. Fantastic facility up at St Andrews.

"So, I'm looking forward to it. And then we'll see what this St Mirren game brings, which will be a real tough test for us because they're normally a couple of weeks ahead of us.”

On new signings, and if there’s any deals close, Simmo explained:

“Not at this moment, no.

"There's going to be a loan signing coming in from a Premier League club, but it's going to be at the end of this month because he's got to go away with them on their pre-season trip. Everything's agreed for it. Fingers crossed he comes back fit. And we'll see how we go then.”
