The Blues were held to a goalless draw on the road in their third pre-season fixture.
United had their first chance on goal inside two minutes. Dan Butterworth picked the ball up on the edge of the area, before firing from distance but his effort was deflected wide for a corner, which came to nothing.
On 9 minutes, Charlie Wyke came close to breaking the deadlock. Cameron Harper’s outswinging corner picked out the forward before his header flew wide.
The Blues continued to apply pressure as we approached the 20-minute mark. Some neat interlinking play ended with Jack Ellis firing a low cross into the hosts’ box, which had to be turned behind.
On 30 minutes, Mellish whipped a cross into the area and found youngster Sam Hetherington, whose left-footed effort on the volley landed the wrong side of Workington’s post.
The same two players would help create our next chance. Mellish the creator again finding Hetherington, but his shot went over Workington’s crossbar.
HALF-TIME: Workington 0-0 United
Five minutes after entering the action, Luke Armstrong - who replaced Wyke and also took the captain’s armband - forced the hosts’ shot-stopper into a good reaction save, prior to Hetherington’s effort which was deflected off target.
On 57 minutes, Aran Fitzpatrick slipped in Mellish down the left, who played the ball square to Hetherington and the midfielder’s effort was ultimately clawed off the line by Alex Mitchell.
On the hour mark, United made nine changes with only Armstrong and Fitzpatrick remaining on the pitch.
Archie Davies had an opportunity to break the deadlock on 65 minutes, but his effort from the edge of the box flew over Mitchell’s bar.
On 77 minutes, Workington had a golden chance to open the scoring. Aaron Hayden’s back pass was too short to Jude Smith, Steven Rigg was alert to pick up the ball, but fired over United’s crossbar from close range.
