UNITED HOST BATON OF HOPE EVENT AT BRUNTON PARK

BOH

Carlisle United were pleased to host a talk from Baton of Hope Cumbria’s Jonny and Lisa Birdsall before Saturday’s game against Bradford City, detailing the Baton’s upcoming tour.

Baton of Hope Cumbria is part of a growing movement aspiring to a zero-suicide society which will come to the county on Sunday 7 September, visiting Brunton Park on the route.

The two planning leads from the organisation detailed the reasons behind the tour, highlighting that Cumbria has a suicide rate that is 55% above the national average, with Copeland and Carlisle having the top two highest suicide rates per district in England and Wales.

Their personal stories are also a key factor in the need to open up conversations around the topic through the initiative.

They also highlighted the need for baton-bearers, an opportunity for those personally affected by suicide to carry the Baton representing any loved one they have lost.

Baton of Hope Cumbria plan to unite third-sector organisations, businesses and individuals to bring attention to the support on offer to those struggling with mental health and affected by suicide.

EDI lead for the club and Carlisle United Community Sports Trust, Teresa Mulholland said: “Suicide prevention is a crucial issue, particularly in regions like Cumbria where our rates are alarmingly high.

“Baton of Hope’s approach, bringing together those affected by suicide to carry the baton and creating open conversations around mental health has the potential to make a real impact.

“The tour through Cumbria, including a visit to us at Brunton Park, serves as a powerful way to unite communities, raise awareness, and remind people of the resources and support available. It’s especially meaningful that individuals with personal experiences are at the forefront of this.”

Baton of Hope project lead, Lisa Birdsall added: “It was really important to do this at Carlisle United to raise attention for suicide awareness and prevention and what we are trying to achieve.

“It’s also vital because the club are a main part of this initiative here in Cumbria, with Teresa (Mulholland) on our planning committee.

“We want to help combat the stigma that surrounds mental health and suicide in general and we really feel like Carlisle United are amazing partners to do that.”
