SAM LAVELLE SPEAKS AHEAD OF THE TRIP TO COLCHESTER

SAM LAVELLE

Ahead of this weekend's trip to Colchester, we spoke to Sam Lavelle.

Firstly, assessing last night's defeat to Notts County, he said: "It's frustrating, yeah.

"We've come in this morning for a recovery session and lads are just talking downstairs about how frustrated they are of it again.

"I thought first-half we were poor, apart from the first five minutes we started well I think, but then the first goal knocked the stuffing out of us a little bit and the first-half was completely theirs.

"They dominated us, they were passing it around and we couldn't really get near but once we got to half-time at 2-0, we were still in the game and the gaffer gave us instructions about how to get closer and how to keep doing the things that we worked on all week and we did them better.

"Second-half and I think the last half-an-hour, it was absolute domination really, I think look at the stats we had something like 20 shots to their six, a lot of big chances but for some reason we couldn't find the back of the net.

"The 'keeper did well, some good defending, but yeah, frustrating really because it's another three points or at least a point dropped."

It was a disappointing first-half for the Blues, despite Cameron Harper and Archie Davies firing on Alex Bass' goal in the opening exchanges.

"I think when you're down there and you're sort of used to losing games like we are at the moment sadly, I think you miss them chances and then a mistake happens at the other end and they score from it and it's like, like I said before it knocks the stuffing out of you so yeah it kills us a bit and I think you see the lads' heads drop and we need to work on that.

"I may need to work on that to get the lads' body language better or just to keep everyone to not panic or not get down really because when we concede it's not the end of the world and we've got good enough players to score two or three in a game so yeah maybe a reaction, a better reaction is what we need next game."

When asked what was said at half-time, Lavelle said: "To be fair it was really positive, which is something we've not been used to really when we're 2-0 down and getting passed around, so yeah, it's Busty (Ian Watson) and the gaffer mostly talked about how there's some good bits in it, they were happy with it, it's just moments in the game that Notts County took and just to remind ourselves that they're one of the best teams in the league at this style of play.

"They've been doing it for a few years so they're going to get probably more possession than us or at least spells with possession so just be patient in the shape and then when we jump out of the shape we're getting frustrated because we're not touching the ball for 5-10 minutes, that's when the gaps happen so just be patient and we eventually did that and then I think the word second-half was just to be relentless like the last half-an-hour, they couldn't get out, we were sprinting back in to get another attack going and I think that showed because Notts County were all over the place.

"It was a much improved second-half though wasn't it, clearly what they said in there made an impact and yes we didn't get the goals but it was much better."

When asked how himself and Charlie Wyke would go about lifting spirits ahead of this Saturday's trip to Essex, Sam said: "I think it's important to be disappointed today, let it sink in a little bit and have a day off tomorrow, think about it again but when you come back in Friday to train and travel, just come in with a fresh mind and be like the staff were at half-time.

"I know I've said to a few lads we need to be a bit more arrogant in a way on the pitch, obviously off the pitch, you've got to be a good person but on the pitch be a bit arrogant, like play with a bit more confidence and act like we're one of the better teams with the better squads in the league."

Looking ahead to this weekend's clash with Colchester, the defender said: "It'll be a tough test like all these games are and it shows you, Notts County were poor last week when we watched the game against Morecambe but they were good last night.

"It's the same with different teams, they can perform their best at different games so we've got to be ready for a battle for a start.

"It's a long journey so we need to get that out of our legs as well and not think about that, but yeah, it'll be a tough game but like I said, if we start like we finished the game on Tuesday, we'll steamroll them and I think it's about time that we showed the league and showed everyone watching that we can do that to a team."
