MATCH REPORT: NEWPORT 1-0 UNITED

.

United fell to defeat at Newport on Tuesday night with a second half goal from substitute Kyle Hudlin enough to earn the home side the three points.

Mark Hughes went with an unchanged team for the away trip to Newport, with new signing Matt Dennis taking Ben Barclay's place on the bench being the only change to the 18.

United started brightly and Kadeem Harris went past his man, the cross was only half cleared by Newport but Joe Hugill's toe-poke went just past the post.

Elliot Embleton was the next United man to have a sight of goal after Josh Williams' cross deflected nicely into his path on the edge of the box, but he couldn't keep his effort down.

Joe Hugill was involved again with nine minutes on the clock when he took it off a defender and played in Stephen Wearne, he got the shot off but the keeper parried it away.

Newport created their first chance of the game after 18 minutes. The deep cross into the box was put back across the face of goal by Kamwa but Baker-Richardson couldn't get a touch on it and United got it away.

The Blues created another chance shortly afterwards, with Charlie McArthur putting an inviting ball into the box, Elliot Embleton got his head on it but it went over the bar.

Josh Williams and Stephen Wearne linked up well down the right as the half drew to a close, with the young full-back having a shot deflected just wide of the post. Nick Townsend in the Newport goal punched the resulting corner away.

HALF-TIME: Newport 0-0 United

Stephen Wearne should have put United in front at the start of the second half after he danced past two men in the box, but Townsend stood up to block the shot and also got a strong hand on the follow up from Kadeem Harris.

Callum Whelan looked to set Joe Hugill away with a threaded pass, but the shot went wide as the flag went up for offside.

Newport went ahead after breaking from a United attack. Bobby Kamwa found Hudlin in the box and he slotted it past Gabe Breeze.

United continued to press forward as the clock ticked down which allowed Newport another chance to break. Josh Williams stuck with his man brilliantly to make the tackle in the box as the home side looked to put the game to bed.

The Blues couldn't find a way through and Newport earned their fourth victory in a row.
