This week is all about the preparation for the final game of the season with Stockport and United in a straight knockout for the right to step up a division to League One, but manager Paul Simpson insisted that there’ll be no deviation from the way things have been done so far in this campaign.
“We train exactly like we have been,” he told us. “Our season still has one week to go and we’ll be ready for it. We’ve got training days, we’ve got travel days, so we will be ready for it.
“We’ll get freshened up, and I’ve said this before, if you can’t get up for a game at Wembley then you’ve got serious problems. I can’t wait for it, I’m really looking forward to leading us out there, and I’m looking forward to us going and performing. We’ve shown we can handle these occasions and now we have to do it one more time.
“And for me to walk out with my hometown club the truth is, it means everything. It meant everything to win a World Cup with England, it meant everything to be promoted with Blackpool and Man City and Derby County.
“And this is up there with everything else I've ever achieved in football, and I can't differentiate between one or the other. It's just a brilliant achievement from everybody concerned.
“It ranks as great as anything else I've ever done. I think when you get success you have to enjoy it and you can't put one ahead of the other because there's lots of down times in football, and you have to really enjoy every good time.”
“We’re at a point now where we have to try to make one more game enjoyable for everybody,” he concluded. “We've got to go on what is, for me, the best stage in English football.
“For me, the best stage in world football, to go to Wembley, hopefully with a big crowd and hopefully go and do the job.
“This is the kind of thing I’d much rather be doing . I'd much rather have the chaos that we've got, and that's going to come, rather than being sat at home.
“Well, in fact, on Monday it'll be a case of going in and doing contract situations. So we've got a brilliant week to look forward to, but what I will say is we can't just make the numbers up at Wembley.
“We've got to go and do it properly. We're going to get incredible support there. It's going to be a brilliant day for us. We have to make sure we perform.
“We have to make sure that we do everything we possibly can to come out on top, and I know we’ve got more than enough to cause Stockport problems.
“We’re there now, it’s been a slog, so let’s see what next weekend brings.”
