It's fair to say that the first half of the season has been a struggle for Hartlepool, with just the four wins from their first 25 games.
Things are very tight at the bottom of the division though, and manager Keith Curle has a reputation for turning clubs round and digging them out of tight spots.
That point was proven once again on Saturday with an important 2-0 home win over fellow strugglers Rochdale.
They climbed out of the relegation zone courtesy of those three points, and will be looking to continue that upward momentum.
Goals conceded has been an issue - they have the division's biggest against tally as things stand with 47 - and that's something that must change through their remaining 20 fixtures.
Midfielder Matty Dolan was the first piece of January business when he arrived on loan from Newport, with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the season.
Veteran defender Peter Hartley agreed a short-term contract on his return from India, and Daniel Dodds brings more to the back line having made the short hop from Boro on a permanent contract.
More work to address the defemsive issues was done when Edon Pruti made the swicth from Brentford B on a permanent deal, with terms undisclosed.
Josh Umerah has been a regular name on the scoresheet with 12 goals from 30 appearances so far - his latest was the opener in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Dale.
He's dangerous around the edge of the area, and can break the lines if given the right kind of service.
As for the last time we met this season, he's our one to watch.

Our referee for this game is Samuel Barrott. He has taken charge of 28 games so far this season showing 80 yellow cards and two reds.
He was at Brunton Park for the FA Cup meeting with Shrewsbury in December 2021 where the visitors scored twice to give themselves a 2-0 lead. Jordan Gibson netted in time added on, but it wasn't enough to change the end result. Morgan Feeney, Corey Whelan and Zach Clough were booked for the Blues.
He was at Brunton Park in October 2021 for the 2-0 reverse at the hands of Forest Green. Jamille Matt and Nicky Cadden did the first half damage, and Tristan Abrahams and Brennan Dickenson were booked for the Blues.
He was with us for the first time when he officiated in the 2-0 home win over Scunthorpe in April 2021, where Jon Mellish bagged both goals. No Carlisle names were taken on the day.
