With four weeks of the summer transfer window left to go manager Paul Simpson confirmed at his pre-match press conference that he’s still in the market for at least two more signings, with another forward option and a third keeper on the radar.
“There may be more incomings depending on where we end up goalkeeping wise,” he said. “There may be something left in the budget to bring somebody else in after that.
“At the moment I’m really comfortable with what we’ve got. There are going to be four or five players who aren’t going to be in the 18 as it is, and I don’t want that to get up to seven or eight because that’s when it becomes a bit of a problem.
“I want to go with a tight squad but I also want to make sure we’ve got enough. Once I get the keeper position sorted there are a few other things we’ve kept warm on the back burner for the last few weeks.
“Premier League and Championship clubs are just coming back from pre-season tours at the moment so that situation might just evolve over the next few weeks.
“There might be others, but I’m really comfortable with what we’ve got going into the game this weekend, and at the moment that’s the only one that matters.”
“We’re going to need goals so I just want goalscorers,” he added. “We’re going to need goals, simple as that.
“We lost Kristian Dennis, who was a big bulk of our goals last season, and we need to replace them somehow. We need to get as many goals in the group as we can.
“If the player who we’ve been waiting and waiting for does become available, we will try and get him in because I think he’ll be a good addition to us. That’s a loan player.”
The arrival of Luke Plange as signing number nine raised the obvious question of whether or not his teammate JK Gordon could be making a return.
“He’s not somebody I’m thinking about at the moment, to be perfectly honest,” he commented. “I think JK was one of those players where I describe him as an 11 who can play as a 9.
“I want a 9 who can also play as an 11. That’s what I’m looking for, because the way we play, we don’t play with wingers in the shape we generally go with.
“And also JK’s been absolutely flying with Palace’s first team. It’s not one I’m considering at the moment, but it may be something that opens up later in the window.”
And on the possibility of some of our squad members heading out of the door, he said: “Possibly, but nothing in terms of the ones who might be playing in our first team.
“There may be something that will happen with younger players, something might happen quickly with one of those, but at the moment it’s a case of just getting ready for Saturday and hope that we can get off to a good start.”
