Keeper Jokull Andresson joined the club on a season-long loan deal this morning and manager Paul Simpson spoke about the importance of an addition that adds vital competition for places in an already competitive department.
“I’m delighted that we’ve got a keeper in because it’s something we’ve been looking to do,” he said. “We’ve been waiting patiently, we’ve done a lot of talking, and I think in Jokull we’ve got a goalkeeper who has shown on his loans that he’s capable of playing at this level.
“The challenge for him now is to show us that he deserves to start in our team. I never guarantee to anybody that they’re going to play, or that they’re going to be a starter, so it’s on him to come in and make his claim.
“He has a really enthusiastic, energetic type of personality which we think will be brilliant for us the group. When you take a player on loan it’s a gamble anyway, but when it’s a first loan it’s an even bigger gamble.
“The fact that he’s done this before a number of times means he knows what he’s coming out to and he knows what this level is like, which is something else that’s really important.
“It’s a really good one for us, I’m pleased we’ve got him in, and now with Tomas, Gabe and Jokull I’m hoping we’ve got enough to cover us in that area.
“And along with cover it’s competition to push for that number one shirt. That’s what we have to. We need players who are capable of being starters for us and Jokull certainly is.
“He now has to oust Tomas by showing us that he deserves to start. I’m looking forward to getting him out on the grass and getting started with him and we’ll see how we go from there.”
Could there be any more ahead of Saturday’s game?
“Not before the weekend, no,” he told us. “That’ll be it for now. We’re still looking at a lot of things and trying to get players in to cover us and to give us a stronger squad, but we’re just going to have to continue to be patient.”
