MATCH REPORT: Walsall

The run of Saturday home games continued for the Blues as in-form Walsall came to Brunton Park.

Manager Paul Simpson made two changes to his side from Tuesday's away draw at Harrogate, with Jon Mellish, back from suspension, in for Corey Whelan in defence.

Jordan Gibson also got the nod to start up front with Kristian Dennis having struggled with a tight calf through the second part of the week. The good news was that Dennis was on the bench.

Striker Jack Stretton was also amongst the substitutes with his ankle problem hopefully now a thing of the past.

United kicked towards the Warwick, into bright sunshine, and there was a half chance for Walsall in the second minute when they tried to utilise the glare with a lumped ball forward. It bounced awkwardly, Johnson took a touch, but he was at a tight angle and his shot lacked power.

Strong work from Charters saw him shrug White off the ball before sliding it into the channel at the other end. Armer crossed early but White had recovered and he made the clearance.

There was good football from the Blues when Mellish trapped a spinning ball inside the opposition half. He surged forward, then poked it out to Armer. An intelligent reverse pass went back to Mellish, and he won a corner with his early delivery.

Moxon put that on the keeper, and the punch from Evans fell invitingly for Guy, 20-yards out. He set himself for a pildedriver, but Monthe somehow got a boot to the goalbound stinger. Huntington kept it alive, and Armer's stab on the turn was deflected just wide of the target.

Another testing corner brought appeals for a penalty as both Edmondson and Mellish were grappled, and Evans was grateful as a header from Armer fell into his arms.

Guy had his shooting boots on and he was deep again as Moxon, Charters and Mellish carved a path. He kept it low when it eventually feel in front of him, but it struck a defending thigh as it dramatically changed course.

A foul on Maddocks by Charters gave the Saddlers an opportunity to go for it 28-yards out, but Knowles could only find the wall and the moment was gone.

United came with a patient build-up just past the half hour after Edmondson had shielded it. Mellish and Armer worked the angles with the latter able to swipe it deep. Back arrived at the far post with a downward header and Evans had to scamper backwards to tip it over the bar.

Walsall rallied and a run from Bennett saw him clip it in from wide. Feeney made the clearance with a diving header. A long throw resulted in a mini-scramble, but Monthe was off balance and his mishit arrowed at the corner flag.

The Saddlers were awarded another foul in a dangerous area, this time off to the right, but Moxon was on hand to head it behind to safety. Holy was impeded as the set piece came in and he placed it for a free kick.

There was controversy on 40 minutes when Jack Armer was pushed to the floor by Bennett as he ran clean through following a spree of one-touch passing. The referee showed no interest at all, despite there being a clear case of a hand on the back.

United had the chance of the half in time added on when Moxon charged a clearance down. Gibson was suddenly in a very advanced position, and he used the time he had well to produce a neat pull back. Charters saw it, and he raced forward with the goal at his mercy. He tried to place it in the roof of the net but he got too much on it and it sped an inch too high.

The second period took a while to get going, with a hint of a chance for the Cumbrians when Gibson pulled wide. Back then Guy curled balls in, but it wouldn't quite drop.

There was a brief moment of concern when Walsall bent a free kick from wide into the mix. White and Monthe challenged but it fell wide of the post.

Johnson was the recipient after a couple of 50:50 challenges went the way of the visitors, and he took matters into his own hands with a blistering effort from distance. Holy tipped it over his bar.

The teams cancelled each other out for the most part, with Maddocks summing up the tightness of the encounter when he chose to have go as he was pushed wider and wider. Suffice to say it sailed off into the setting sun.

A corner from Moxon on 70 minutes whisked past everybody and Evans was relieved to see it skip up off the surface and behind for a goal kick.

Carlisle were nearly undone when Evans rolled the ball out to Monthe. His ball up the line found Hutchinson, and he was able to send it into the area. Huntington held his ground to see the danger clear.

Holy had to palm a free kick from Comley away from the top corner, and United broke from the set piece with a neat pass forward from Gibson. Edmondson backheeled for Mellish to run on, and his cross was deflected.

Moxon found another good corner inswinging corner, and a flick from Edmondson was chested off the line by Maddocks.

It felt like it was going to come down to one moment of magic, or a horrible mistake, and Feeney tried to supply it with a volley off his own touch with just three minutes left to play. Dennis had sparked the attack with a lovely ball forward, Stretton kept it going through his industry, but it ws lashed over the bar.

Maddocks pulled a grasscutter into the Warwick as he searched for late glory, and Bennett went for it from a similar distance, only to see it rise harmlessly.

Huntington headed into the advertising hoardings deep into time added on, when a flighted set piece came his way, and that proved to be the last chance of the day as the referee bizarrely blew for time just as Walsall shaped to take a free kick.
