United’s fans have been through the mill this season - there’s absolutely no doubt about that - so a week which has seen pessimism turn to optimism backed up by a haul of nine points from a possible nine is little more than they deserved, with them having done their bit to help their team climb out of the bottom two.
“The support we’ve had in all three games has been unbelievable,” manager Paul Simpson said. “It’s absolutely superb.
“I’ve told the lads they have to get ready for next week because Brunton Park will be bouncing next Saturday, and we have to be ready and able to deal with it.
“These are the moments as a footballer where you have to deal with pressures you perhaps aren’t used to, and there will be an expectation.
“If we show the same commitment and work ethic, the same desire and positive mentality, hopefully we’ll give the fans something more to smile about.
“Like I say, I told them at half-time to start getting a picture in their minds of celebrating in front of the fans if they could go and get themselves a goal and a result.
“If you do things right, what a wonderful feeling. Get a picture. I hope somebody has got a photograph of that because that will be my opening slide on my next presentation to them.
“What the last week has done is given us a platform, some backing, but we have to keep it. We don’t want it to be that we come back to our home ground and we let it fall.
“We’ve got to maintain it, do everything we possibly can to be absolutely spot on, and deal with whatever adversity comes our way.
“Next weekend will see an even bigger crowd, they’ll be on a high, and it’ll be really special for the players. I’ll hopefully just slope into the dugout and let the players crack on and do the business that they’ve been doing.”
The obvious effect of three consecutive victories is on the league table, albeit the United boss is still making a point of not getting too carried away or taking too much notice of that.
“I know we’ve got three points more so it must look healthier than it did before the game,” he conceded. “We’ve just got to keep going. I’ll be honest, I haven’t even looked at any other results because it’s just about us.
“If we do our jobs properly, and we have the teams who are competing with us at the bottom of the table to play, so if we do it right we’ll be fine.
“There must be a bit of a gap, we know for a fact there’s a six-point gap between us and Oldham, so we’ve just got to make sure we’re at least the third from bottom team in the league, it’s a simple as that. The more times we perform like this the better the league table will look.”
