Striker Kristian Dennis is rapidly becoming known as a Mr Reliable style character as he equalled Alan Ashman’s record breaking start to a season with five goals from his first five games at Stevenage on Saturday.
"He’s in absolutely flying form at the moment,” gaffer Paul Simpson said. “It’s a great piece of skill from Gibbo on the right, and another good finish.
“We just changed it a little bit because they were getting out too easy. We tweaked the shape a little bit and we looked better when we did that.
“It’s a great bit of ability from Jordan on the right, clipped it in and ‘Johnny on the spot’ Kirstian is there and nods it over the line.
“I was hoping that was the lifeline, the spark for us, sadly it didn’t spark us into a flame and the game seemed to peter out with them, gamesmanship, winning free-kicks, wasting time, but they were effective at it.”
“He’s been really god for us but we need others to chip in as well. Denno can’t carry on scoring on his own. We’ve got to all chip in.
“I always think the first one is the hardest, so hopefully we’ll get others chipping in with goals. We should have got a goal from a set play at the far post when Corey headed it wide. So many nearly things we could have got ourselves back in, and at least a point out of it.
“There were a couple of times where we were really close to getting in. Jordan Gibson caused a lot of problems, Fin kept pushing and probing down the right, they worked it well together.
“We had times where it dropped to the edge of the box but they managed to get close enough to get blocks, times when it didn’t quite drop for Denno. Little things, it was a so close but so far situation. Disappointingly it finishes and we’re on the losing end.”
“But we hope Kristian carries on doing it as well,” he concluded. “I said when I came in last season he got selected because I remember him being a goalscorer for Chesterfield, however many years ago that was.
“My son Jake was working there, and I was watching games. I think the good thing with Denno this year is he’s got himself fitter. He’s in a real good shape.
“As a striker, you thrive on goals. Because he’s getting goals, he goes out in games expecting to score, whereas others go out hoping to score. Long may it continue.”
