United’s captain Callum Guy admitted after full-time on Saturday that there was a lot of disappointment in the dressing room at Hartlepool with the group having suffered their first league defeat of the season.
“It was a bad day at the office, we weren’t really at it and we’re disappointed about that,” he said. “We got beat, which is nothing more than we deserved, and we know we have to be better.
“It’s hard to put a finger on why, we just didn’t quite click. We changed formation and we’d been working on that in training all week, and that looked good.
“Going into the game we felt good, and we were buzzing with all of the fans being there. They packed out the away end and they were brilliant for us again.
“It was nothing in particular that caused it, we just weren’t quite at it.”
Having got the equaliser from a good piece of football, it looked to be set up for the away side to kick on.
“We hadn’t created much before that but it was nice to get back on terms without us having played at our best,” he told us. “Unfortunately after we scored we didn’t capitalise on it.
“The gaffer spoke to us at half time, that was a really positive talk, but when we came out for the second half it was the same as the first.
“It just didn’t quite go right for us. We don’t have too many games like this and I think we’ve started the season quite well.
“We’ve put in some good performances and we probably should have taken three points from the games we’ve drawn.
“That wasn’t the case with this one but with the lads we have in this dressing room we’ll be there to put it right on Tuesday and on Saturday.”
“Every team will have an off day at times during the season,” he added. “It’s about putting it right, and we’re definitely capable of that.
“It’s a good bunch and they’re all really disappointed. We’ve let the fans down with this one and we’re eager to set that right.
“We did have positives, Zach got off the mark and he’ll be buzzing with that. Their fans were giving him some stick so it was nice for him to do that.
“He looks great after missing the first few games and I’m sure he’ll push on.”
“As a group we all want to do well for this club and for ourselves,” he concluded. “We know the performance let the fans down and they travelled over in numbers.
“They sang throughout the game and gave us really good backing, and I’m disappointed for them.
"We can only apologise and say that we’ll get it right next time.”
