Defender Tom Parkes confirmed the frustration felt by the team following Saturday's result at Newport but also insisted that the squad is ready to turn things round as they look towards another tough game at the weekend.
“We’re very disappointed about the result on Saturday,” he said. “We knew it was going to be a tough game with their pitch and the way they play.
"We’re disappointed that we didn’t take our chances when we had them, and we’re massively disappointed to concede from two set pieces.
“As defenders our job is to make sure we defend our box, and as a team we didn’t do that on Saturday. We’ve got to be strong, especially for free kicks and corners, and we didn’t do that on Saturday, which is what cost us.
“It’s frustrating because we’ve been doing well defensively, especially for set pieces, so it is disappointing. We knew that was one of their strengths, but we didn’t deal with it. We’ve got to make sure we move on quickly and prepare right for the Swindon game now."
“The fans have been fantastic home and away this season but we want to make sure we get it right when we’re back at Brunton Park on Saturday," he continued. "It’s a massive game and I’m sure the fans will be right behind us again, which will hopefully give us that extra push so we get the win we all want.
“We know that if we want to do well in this league we have to start picking up the results. The last five games haven’t shown what we’re capable of, so we need to turn that round by getting a win so that we can get ourselves back up the league.
“It’s all about fine margins at this level - we saw that at Colchester. We were in the lead going into the last ten minutes and the ball dropped for one of their lads, and he headed it straight through my legs. It's things like that which are disappointing."
As to what's needed going forward, he told us: “We know as a squad we’ve got to pick ourselves up and start scoring more goals.
"Hopefully we can go on another run, just like we did over the festive period, which would see us right back up there again. We’ve got to believe in what we’re doing. There are good players in this squad with a good mix of experience and youth. We’ll just work hard this week and look to turn it around on Saturday.
“We’re still only one point outside the play-offs and I think sometimes when you’re in this position you might feel a bit of pressure, but we’ve got to accept that and deal with it.
"We’ve put ourselves in this position and we want to continue it, but to do that we have to win games. That's the only thing that will take the pressure off.
“Sometimes you feel as a more experienced player that there’s more pressure on you to sort things out on the pitch, but I think everyone tries to take charge of things, however many games they’ve played.
“If we can get a positive result on Saturday it could put us right back up the league, which is where we want to be.”
