Joint caretaker boss Tommy Wright confirmed this week that work on identifying players is ongoing as the January transfer window enters its first week.
“The club have tried their hardest to keep Ashley [Nadesan] but that’s in Fleetwood’s hands,” he told us. “Ashley has been recalled but we’re still talking to Fleetwood. We’re not sure what Fleetwood want, so we’ll wait and see what comes of it.
“We think Fleetwood want to get some money for him before he’s out of contract, which you completely understand. We’ll keep knocking on the door to see if we can come to an agreement. His overall game has improved with us, and he’s enjoyed it here, but we have to wait and see what Joey [Barton] and his club want to do.”
“Obviously Anthony Gerrard comes out of contract this week and David [Holdsworth] is speaking to him again,” he confirmed. “I’d love Anthony to stay because he’s a great character in the dressing room. His experience at the back has been fantastic, so fingers crossed.
“Like I say, he’s a great character, and I’m not sure what he’s doing. He’s maybe playing a bit of a game because he likes a drama does our Gez. He’s a great guy and he’s a leader at the back, he’s got that experience and he’s organised. It’s up to the club, but I think the club should sign him.”
“We’ve already been identifying and speaking to other players and that work will continue,” he added. “We lost one to another club at the end of last week, which we were disappointed about, but we’re still speaking to a couple of clubs.
“It’s still early in the window, but we know we need to bolster the squad. Especially with the position we’re in now, because we’ve got a great opportunity. Sometimes you don’t get opportunities like this very often, so it’s important we take it when it comes, but you don’t win anything in January.
“I’m on the phone all the time trying to get players in. We have to be honest and say that people are hedging their bets a bit as well to see what’s going here. We’ll keep plugging away because we know we need to bring bodies in.”
And on the situation with Rotherham forward Jerry Yates, he said: “I spoke to Paul Warne and I don’t want to tempt fate, but there is a chance of that happening.
“He liked it here, and they know we want him and that we look after him. He’s their player, so we respect that, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on the situation.”
