United's final away trip of the season was the relatively long journey to face Walsall on Tuesday afternoon.
The Saddlers took the lead via an early first half penalty and things remained tight in a game which was nip and tuck all the way.
Both teams stuck to the task through the second period but in the end the solitary goal was enough for the home side to take the points.
Youth coach Gavin Skelton said: "It was a very scrappy and close game.
"There wasn't much in the way of clear chances and Liam McCarron and Josh Dixon came closest to scoring for us.
"The lads are disappointed but they'll be looking to wrap things up properly when they play Accrington in their last game on Saturday."
