Carlisle United Football Club can confirm that midfielder Mike Jones has become the third player to trigger a contract extension which keeps him at Brunton Park until the summer of 2019.

Jones, 31, recently reached the 450-career appearance milestone and has made a total of 77 appearances for the Blues since joining the club in July 2016. This includes 44 run-outs in all competitions so far this season.

A favourite with the Blue Army, the news that the trigger clause had been reached was well received by the fans when United boss Keith Curle spoke about this week’s trio of extensions [click HERE to read an interview with Jamie Devitt and HERE to read an interview with Gary Liddle about their contract extensions] at his Thursday afternoon press conference.

The playmaker is now automatically committed to the Cumbrians for the 2018/19 campaign and, under the terms of the trigger clause, can open discussions with the club about improved personal terms. Whatever the outcome of those talks, he is guaranteed at least the same terms within his contract extension with United for the season ahead.

We’ll be speaking about the contract extension with Mike Jones after this weekend’s trip to Exeter.

The club can confirm that no other players have options, triggers or automatic extensions which could be activated this season.
