Goalkeeper Joe Fryer spoke to us this week about pre-season so far and about working hard to get in the team for the first game of the season against Exeter.

“Pre-season is flying by,” he admitted. “It feels like just yesterday when we were doing an interview about me signing. We’ve done a lot of work in training and the games are coming thick and fast now, and we’ll soon be at Exeter.

“Working with Dan [Watson] has been going really well. He’s a really good guy and a great character. I think he’s good for the whole team, not just the goalkeepers, and I’m really enjoying it so far. We’re building up good camaraderie, but once the session starts we all switch on and take things seriously."

“It’s been good to get plenty of pitch time even though we did have one game called off," he said. "It was good to get another 45 minutes at Workington and we’ve still got the Bradford game before we go to Exeter.

“I’ve been pleased with my overall performances. I’ve conceded two goals in the four games I’ve played now and I obviously want to improve that, even though it is pre-season.

"It will be good to hopefully get some more minutes against Bradford before the Exeter game. I’ve made a few saves in the games so far which is always nice, but you’ve just got to do what you’ve got to do."

“I feel like I’ve settled in well," he continued. "We’ve got a good group of lads here and I feel like I’ve fitted in straight away. I want to do the best I can while I’m here and I know the rest of the lads and the staff feel the same. When I first spoke to the gaffer he said this club has got all the talent it needs to get promoted, and that’s where we all want to be.

“Myself and Adam [Collin] are both competing and we both want to be in the team for that first game at Exeter. We’ve got another week and a bit to stake our claim and I think that competition is vital. Everyone needs competition, to make sure you don’t take your foot off the gas. Whoever plays at Exeter, we’ll both support each other and keep pushing each other on.

“I wouldn’t say I was getting nervous as we get closer to the start of the season because this is what we do. This is what we’ve been working towards and wanting that shirt for the first game is what keeps you motivated.”
