Inconsistency crept back into a disappointing performance as United lost out on their long trip to Wrexham.
Youth coach Vince Overson said: "We keep talking about inconsistency with young lads and it's come back to haunt us again today.
"It was a lesson for the lads in how important it is to know your roles and responsibilities and to stick to the game plan.
"We lacked discipline in the way we needed to keep our shape and that caused us to chase after the ball. Wrexham reacted to that and picked us off.
"As I say, they will have learned from it but we come away feeling disappointed with our overall performance."
