Luke Joyce on fitness and being ready for the test ahead
Trinity School Year 10 students Sophie Mason and Will Stuart caught up with midfielder Luke Joyce last week to talk about his hopes for the coming campaign.
“I’d like to finish above where we did last season,” he said. “We finished tenth so the aim has to be to finish above that. If we can do a little better then hopefully the play-offs aren’t too far beyond us, and we can even look towards the top three.
“We have new players in who will excite the fans and everyone is working hard because we know there will be competition for places. Pre-season is going well and we’re doing things which are bringing us together.”
Last man standing for the first bleep test of the new season, he said: “It was tough, but it was nice to be last on there and to win it.
“I pride myself on my fitness because it’s an important part of the job and the way I play. It’s always good to push yourself and that’s what I’ll keep doing as we go through the next few weeks ahead of the trip to Portsmouth.”
As well as being optimistic for what United can achieve this season he also revealed that he has at least one personal target.
“I didn’t score any goals last season so it would be nice to chip in with one or two,” he told us. “Other than that, I’ll work on the parts of my game I feel I can improve.
“We all want this to be a successful season and I’m the same as every player. I want to be in the team for the first game of the season and then do enough to stay in it.”
