First competitive tournament a success
We are delighted to report we had an excellent session with our three Walking Football teams on Friday 13 February - the omens of bad luck were certainly not against them as they went to their first competitive tournament at Lytham Football Club. The three teams of six ageing, but enthusiastic and talented players, took on the might of Blackpool FC, Lytham FC and Manchester City FC.
Playing on undulating grass pitches, in a strong wind, all three Carlisle teams successfully made it out of their respective leagues to the semi-final of the knock out stages. With ages ranging from 52 to 71, a Carlisle team was certain to make it to the final of this well organised and enjoyable knock out competition.
At the final whistle of a very competitive final the score between a well-drilled United side, playing against a rather physical Manchester City A team, remained goalless. The dreaded penalty shoot-out ended 2-0 to a victorious Carlisle United B team.
Our three teams, who sent ripples of interest throughout the Walking Football community in the North West, had gained a lot of respect and the gentlemen involved had clearly rolled back the years.
Quotes like – “I never thought that I would play on grass again” and “I hadn’t played competitive football for over twenty years” – rang around the Punch and Truncheon Pub in Blackpool at the end of the tournament. Possession, organisation and togetherness could mean these teams will continue to flourish in the ever growing world of Walking Football.
Sessions take place at the Neil Sports Centre (Brunton Park) every Tuesday afternoon from 2pm until 3pm. This activity is open to men over 50 years young and we have been averaging around 20 participants every week. Please come along and join in - not only for a game of football but for the social side afterwards.
