Lucas Dawson on his loan deal
Stoke City midfielder Lucas Dawson spoke to us about what he wants from his loan spell shortly after putting pen to paper on a deal which keeps him at Brunton Park until the end of the current season.
“I think this all came about because Kav came to watch a reserve game down at Stoke a while ago,” he explained. “He must have liked me because he invited me to come up and train.
“It’s been good for me the last few days because I’ve been able to get to know the lads and get involved in the training sessions with the team. It’s a nice set of lads and everyone gets along really well. I’ve really enjoyed myself and being up here like this has probably helped to move the loan deal along.”
“I was actually on my back to Stoke when I got the phone call to tell me this was becoming a loan deal,” he explained. “I was told to come straight back and I’m just pleased I managed to get it done in time. Going out on loan is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I’m going to grasp the chance and see where it goes from here.”
“I’ve been on the bench a couple of times for Stoke but they’ve never really seen me in a competitive environment,” he said. “I was with the first team for the Europa League games against Valencia and Besiktas, and that was a great experience. I feel ready for being involved with a first team more and that’s what I’ve come up here to do.
“I’m looking forward to being able to show people what I can do. My contract is up down there at the end of this season so we’ll have to see how things go. This has come at exactly the right time for me and it’s a challenge I’m looking forward to.
“If I can help the team to get some points I’ll be very happy. I’ve had a chat with Kav and he wants me to work hard and try to make a positive impact. Hopefully that’s how it will go.”
On how he likes to play, he said: “I like to get on the ball as much as possible. I try and play it around and create chances, and I like to get others involved as much as possible. If I can get up the pitch, I will, but I’ll do whatever I’m needed to do.
“I know the results haven’t gone our way recently but it doesn’t feel like a club that’s struggling. I’ve watched a couple of games and I think the lads have played well. They’ve been unlucky not to grab the three points in a few games.
“Everyone knows what has to happen at the moment. We have to get points and climb the table so we’ve all been working really hard to make that the case. The game this weekend is another big one for us and we’ll be going there to get a positive result. Like I say, if I’m involved I’ll be doing as much as I can to make sure we get a good result so that we can start to climb up the table.”
