Alex Salmon on the Colchester game
Alex Salmon spoke to us about making his home debut shortly after full time on Saturday.
"The past couple of weeks have been brilliant," he said. "I was worried about the contract situation before that, but since then I've played in a cup final and made my first team debut, so you can't ask for much more than that. I got about half an hour in this one and I loved it."
"Greg [Abbott] makes sure I know what he wants me to do before I go on and hopefully I've done what he's asked of me so far," he told us. "The pace of the game is much faster than the youth games and you've always got to be switched on.
"I think I've coped with it so far. Bournemouth was a bit different - I think I only got one touch of the ball in that game - but I got a couple more on Saturday, so I was pleased about that."
"I know people say I'm cocky and confident but I do still get nervous when I'm told I was going on," he admitted. "Once I'd got my first touch and managed to keep the ball I was fine.
"The other lads have made it really easy for me to be part of the squad. They told me there was nothing to worry about and everyone has been great with me."
"It's taking a while to sink in," he admitted. "I'd just got my head around coming on at Bournemouth then the gaffer told me I was going to be involved again.
"My family are made up as well. It's been one thing after another with the contract and then my debut, so it's nice to be able to make them proud. I just want to work as hard as I can over the summer to give myself the best chance to be involved next season.
"I would love to do what the three lads did this season and earn myself a new deal. It's brilliant to have them to look up to because what they've done is what any young pro should be looking to do. They've played a lot of games and been rewarded with longer contracts, which is fantastic. That just shows that if you put the hard work in then anything can happen."
