Dave Symington looks ahead to the new season
We caught up with wide man Dave Symington as he looks forward to the start of the new season.
“I just want the season to kick off now and hopefully I’ll get my chance,” he said. “I was involved in the Rangers game as the last part of my build-up and it was a good game to play in.
“They were a very good team and it was a chance for me to see where I am in terms of fitness and sharpness. I’m feeling confident and it’s all down to taking my chance when it comes.”
“I’d like to think I’ve done enough to show the manager I’m ready,” he continued. “He’s seen me in training and he knows what I’m capable of by now. Last season was obviously my first season as a pro and I did need to get used to the change in tempo and things like that.
“I’m ready for it this time round and I feel like I’m getting more consistent in my performances. One area everyone wanted me to work on was the delivery of the ball into the box and I think that’s definitely improved. It wasn’t as good for me in the first half against Rangers but it all came together after the break. That’s important because it’s one of the main roles I have.”
“The new signings have added a lot to the squad,” he told us. “David Amoo has lightning quick pace and he is good to watch and to learn from. He can beat three or four men and still find the cross at the end of it. It’s up to me to match that.
“The only thing I’ve been disappointed with this summer has been my free kicks. I’ve been claiming the ball and going for it ... but none of them have even come close!
“I’ve even started to stay behind after training to practice it more because it’s getting to be a little bit frustrating. It comes down to making the right choice – do I shoot or do I put it in the area for the big men? I suppose the problem I have is that as soon as it’s anywhere near 25-yards I feel like I should be having a go.”
“The main feeling in the dressing room is what everyone keeps saying at the moment,” he said. “We want to improve on what we did last season. None of us want a repeat of what we went through. We have to aim for the top half first of all and then take it from there.
“I think we’re all ready for the season and we just want to get on with it.”
