INTERVIEW: A game we want to play

Manager ahead of the Crawley trip

United manager Greg Abbott spoke to us about the long trip to Crawley (weather permitting) at the weekend.

“It’s a strange situation when it’s like this because we have to prepare as if the game is going ahead,” he said.

“All the signs at the moment are that it has a good chance and we’ve done our preparation work as normal. We’re a side which has to travel so, if it is called off, we’ve decided that we will gather everybody together and come back up here to train on Friday afternoon.

“We’re in the lap of the Gods and all we can do is wait and see. We’re staying positive though because it’s a game we really want to play.”

“The result last weekend was fantastic for us and there’s a good feeling about the place,” he continued. “We want to carry that on if at all possible and we know what we’re capable of.

"Things are looking better – it’s still not perfect – but it is definitely looking better for us with an almost full quota to choose from and the lads chomping at the bit to get more positive results.”

“Crawley have a strong squad, with strength in depth, but it’s a game we shouldn’t be afraid of,” he said. “We have to respect the qualities they have but we also have to go down there with the intention of building on what we’ve already done. We’ve picked up nine points from the last five games and we want to try to carry that on.”

“If we do that then we’ll start to get some more of the belief and confidence back around the place,” he concluded. “That’s starting to come but a few more results will really pick people up. The home game against Crawley was one of the poor performances from this season and we want to put that behind us.

“They’re a decent side and they’re a nice, organised unit. It won’t be easy but it’s one we are looking forward to.”
