Tom Lawrence on what he wants from his loan move
On-loan Manchester United striker Tom Lawrence spoke to us ahead of his first training session with the club on Tuesday morning.
"Being involved with Carlisle United is obviously different to playing in the reserves for Manchester United," he admitted. "I'm hoping it will be a great platform to build up my Football League experience.
"I knew Kav had been watching some of the reserve games and then my manager rang and asked me if I wanted to come up here on loan. He told me it would be a great experience to get some games in the league and to get used to the physicality of it.
"Warren [Joyce] did tell me about the other players who have already been here for loan spells and they have all gone on to make a good career for themselves. It's good that I've been given that same opportunity. Saturday was my professional debut so it was nice to play in front of a big crowd in a game that really matters."
"I did have a decent chance with a shot from the edge of the box," he agreed. "I should have taken a touch but I just hit it and it went over the bar. It was great to be involved in that kind of atmosphere. You obviously try and do your best every time you go on the pitch but when there's fans involved it makes it all feel more important.
"League One is different to reserve football because you concentrate more on how you move the ball around in the reserves. In league games you know that everything you do really matters because the three points are so important."
"Kav has asked me to work hard and hopefully I can score some goals and help him and the team climb up the table," he said. "Playing in behind the striker is probably my favourite position but I can play on the left or up top. I like to run at defenders and put them on the back foot and get my shots away.
"I just want to play as many games as I can and score as many goals as I can. Hopefully that will also mean I put in some good performances. I've always heard things about Carlisle United to suggest they're a good footballing team and I think that's something that suits my game."
"Growing up at Old Trafford has been fantastic," he continued. "It's a great environment to learn in because there's so many world class players. I've trained with all of the first team, and watching players like Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie is fantastic. You can always learn things from them.
"Coming into a new club can be a bit nerve wracking but the lads have all been great with me. It was difficult because I was thrown straight into the match on Saturday without even training with the team, but I'm looking forward to having a full week with them and getting to know how they play during training.
"It was good to get on the bus on Friday and see Ben Amos because I obviously already know him. He's said a lot of good things about the club already so I can't wait to get going."
