INTERVIEW: I have something to prove

Greg Fleming on what he wants from this month

Keeper Greg Fleming spoke to us this morning shortly after agreeing a deal to keep him at Brunton Park for the next month.

“I was training with Dundee last week and then I got a call from Tony Caig to say there was a possibility of something happening for me here,” he said.

“I came down last Tuesday and joined in with the training session on the Wednesday ahead of the trip to Kilmarnock. I then got a chance to play against Rangers and that was really good.

“Everyone wants to play games and I hadn’t played a full 90 minutes for a good while before that. It was good to get that under my belt.”

“The fact that I know Tony [Caig] really well has helped me to settle in, and things like that, but I know he isn’t about to do me any favours. His job will be to push me as much as possible and, to be honest, I’m looking forward to pushing myself and to challenging Mark [Gillespie] as much as I can."

“This is hopefully the first step to something longer term,” he confirmed. “It’s up to me to prove to the management staff that I’m worth that.

“I’m at a stage of my career where I do feel that I’ve got something to prove. Things haven’t worked out quite the way I hoped they would but it’s not easy to explain why. It’s just one of those things. Like I say, it’s up to me to put that behind me so, yes, I definitely have something to prove."

“It goes without saying that I’d love to get back to playing regularly," he said. "I think the strengths I bring are my shot-stopping and kicking, and the communication side of things will grow once I get to know everybody better.

“I’m also the kind of player who puts demands on myself anyway. When it comes down to it I have a young family and I want to be able to provide for them. I can only do that if I’m training and playing well.

“That has to be my aim, to settle in and to do the job so that I go on to earn an extended contract.”
