INTERVIEW: Dig deep and stick together

Manager ahead of the Wednesday game

United manager Greg Abbott spoke to us ahead of the visit of Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night.

“We just haven’t got out of the starting blocks yet and that’s something we need to put right,” he said.

“This will be a tough game because they have some fantastic players. We have to do our best to bridge the gap and give our fans plenty to smile about. We need to regain the confidence of the supporters and we can only do that by giving a much better performance.”

“I think we can take encouragement from what we did against Bolton,” he added. “To be honest, we could play against Barcelona tonight and I would still expect a massive improvement on what we saw on Saturday. The fans deserve that at the very least.”

“Saturday tells everyone that we’re a poor team and we haven’t got much to argue against with the way we played,” he explained. “We’re the only ones who can change that opinion.

“We need to dig deep and stick together because our players have to go across the white line when their confidence is a little bit low. It’s amazing how much confidence can affect performances so we need to get that right.”

On the search for new recruits, he said: “We go with what we’ve got. I’ve made a lot of phone calls but it’s difficult to get players in for a cup game because they end up being cup tied, and things like that. We’ll pick it up again when we get to Thursday and see where we go.

“This is a game for us to look forward. We owe our fans a much better display and hopefully that’s what they’ll get from us.”
