Manager ahead of the Bradford game
United manager Greg Abbott spoke to us today about the first away trip of the season this weekend.
“Our season really started on Wednesday night, so we want to take it on from here,” he said. “Seven days is a long time in football and hopefully we’ll all be talking about the fact we look like a decent outfit again on Saturday night.
“We want to build on what we did against Blackburn before we want to see consistency and improvement as we go on from here. We had to give something back to the fans after the way things went last Saturday and we took the first step with that in the cup game. It’s important that we keep that going.”
“I do look going forward to going back there because it’s where I grew up in football terms,” he admitted. “However, that’s all a side issue. It doesn’t alter the way I am.
“I want three points. The atmosphere will be fantastic but we’ll have to deal with all of that, because it’s the result I want. Our group know how important it is to get points on the board because we have to set the tone for the whole season over these next few weeks.”
“We’ve got some good players in our squad and I want them to keep showing that,” he said. “Attacking wise it looked like we were enjoying our football the other night. Look at David Amoo, he’s a player nobody wanted. I actually have a little challenge on with him because I’ve told him to go out and get eight goals. He’s at three already and he’s enjoying his football and he likes where he is right now.
“Lewis Guy is another like that. He’s a local lad and his first goal for the club will have been a big one for him. If he keeps playing this way then he’ll be putting himself right back on the football map.
“It’s almost like looking back to the old days with the rest of the squad. There are a lot of youth graduates in there and that doesn’t happen very often. It’s great for us because a club like this needs that. Where we are right now, and how we have to operate, means that we need young players to be coming through.
“This will be another chance to test themselves for a lot of our group. Players are in the game to play in front of big crowds so they should be looking forward to it. I’m sure we’ll have plenty of our fans there as well, as usual, and hopefully they’ll be the ones smiling come full time.”
