CHARITY: U's take to the road

Mammoth bike ride for Teenage Cancer Trust

Kick off at Brunton Park on Saturday is still four days away but a band of hardy cyclists are already heading north from Colchester as they bid to raise vital funds for a fantastic cause - The Teenage Cancer Trust.

U's chairman Robbie Cowling assembled his squad of fellow cyclists - Richard Cowling, Stuart Begg, Dale Bailey and Sam Wolton - at the Florence Park training ground on Tuesday morning and set off on the first leg of their 320-mile epic ride accompanied by rousing cheers and a stiff breeze.

The pedal-pushers are expected to make their arrival at Brunton Park at approximately 1pm on Saturday afternoon before making a quick change to take their place in the boardroom ahead of the big kick off.

Colchester United's partnership with the national charity has been a long standing one, having first started with a big fundraising effort by the 2005/6 U’s squad in the memory of young supporter Emily Begg, who passed away from leukaemia aged just 14.

At that time the squad raised over £20,000 and subsequent years have seen the U’s make further fundraising efforts for this cause, which ended with the construction of a parents’ kitchen and rest room area in their facility at the University College of London.

We are asking Carlisle United fans to lend their support for this cause ahead of this weekend with a donation of £3.20 (more is always welcome) - equivalent to 1p for every mile of the bike ride.

Fans United - please help if you can.
