Gillespie pens deal
United stopper Mark Gillespie has today signed a new deal which takes him through to the end of June 2015.
Newcastle-born Gillespie, 20, joined United on a YTS contract in 2008 and agreed his first professional deal in May 2010 having played regularly for the reserve team under Greg Abbott.
He made his first-team debut at Carrow Road against Norwich City that same month and in doing so became the youngest keeper to make an appearance at that level for the club, aged just 18 years and 42 days.
He spent three months on-loan with Blyth Spartans during the 2010/11 campaign and earned a one-year extension to his contract in the summer of 2011. A further two year deal was quickly added to that as his services were secured until the summer of 2014.
The agile keeper has made 13 appearances for the Cumbrians this season taking his overall tally to 14 during his time with the club.
Manager Greg Abbott said: “Mark keeps improving and that is good news for all of us.
“We have seen already this season that he is ready to do a job and we think he is just going to get better and better.
“This gives him a chance to really focus now and to push himself on even further.”
We’ll be bringing reaction from Mark Gillespie on Friday morning.
