MIKE WILLIAMSON SPEAKS AHEAD OF GRIMSBY TOWN

Mike

We spoke to Head Coach, Mike Williamson, ahead of our clash with Grimsby on Saturday.

Mike began by discussing how his first full week had gone, saying: “The boys have been brilliant. They're working their socks off and embracing everything we're trying to do.

“The lads are in high spirits after the weekend and looking forward to another tough challenge.

"We're assessing many different things and there's loads to look at and do. We're just trying to keep the main objective, which is to get the lads prepped and ready for Grimsby.

"Good result last weekend, but plenty to work on performance wise. The boys were fantastic. They showed so much grit and determination and real personality and character. And I’m really pleased with that.

“We want to keep implementing things, but make sure it's done steadily.

“They're a great group. Really honest, authentic, hard-working human beings. That's the base for what we want to build."

On Tuesday afternoon, United fielded a youthful 11 against an experienced Blackburn Rovers side in the Central League Cup. Speaking on this fixture, he said: "Blackburn fielded a very strong team.

“I spoke to the lads at half-time and just touched on the mental resilience. If you want a career in this industry, you've got to really toughen up.

“It’s about enthusiasm, endeavour and good habits. I think it was a really good benchmark for our lads to look at them and take a lot from it.

"The pleasing thing was that they kept with it and they pushed and they didn't give up. I think that is 99% of football.”

Gabe Breeze, Jack Ellis, Harrison Neal, Anton Dudik and Jack Robinson also featured, allowing the new coaching team a chance to watch some of their senior squad in action.

“It was good for us to get a look at them. Obviously, it is difficult because you don't want to risk too many. They were brilliant. How they conducted themselves and how they supported the young lads was different class."

Touching on Robinson's return from injury in further detail, he added: “You could see he had the enthusiasm. He was delighted to be out there. We've just got to make sure we build him up appropriately. I'm really pleased for him."

On other injuries, starting with Terell Thomas, Mike explained: “He's joined back in. He did the full session today.

“Again, we've just got to take it slow and steady and make sure we don't throw him in too much.

“Taylor [Charters] and Ethan [Robson] were dipping in and out as well today. Hopefully, there's no reactions and they can push on."

On our opponents, Grimsby, Mike talked through what he expected, saying: “I think we're going to have to win the battle and that could take 85 minutes. Obviously, they have got experience in their team and they've got a way they want to play.

“They can flip it as well with Danny Rose up top who's good in the air and he's got goals. He's experienced at this level.

“They want to play out but they've also got the alternatives. We've got to make sure we're switched on and we defend like we did last weekend.

“We can try and implement a few things in possession. They had a man sent off and I think they picked up an injury or two last weekend as well. They might have to make a few changes.

“They'll have strength in depth and we're making sure we focus on ourselves. Give the boys as much detail as we can about their position."

Mike and his coaching team will take charge at Brunton Park for the first time this weekend, aiming to make it back-to-back wins at the start of their reign.

“I’m very excited. You heard them, the away fans that came to Swindon. It was a great noise and we're looking forward to meeting them at home and getting the place going.

"It’s huge from a points perspective but also just that momentum. It keeps building that feeling of growth and that's why we want to look up the table.

“We know it's a process and it's going to take time but the more points we can acquire, the more confidence it will give us to keep working.”
