MIKE WILLIAMSON SPEAKS AHEAD OF FLEETWOOD TRIP

.

We spoke to Mike Williamson ahead of Saturday’s game against Fleetwood.

“They're in good form,” he said. “They obviously got a good win last night against MK Dons and they were on the front foot, they're really aggressive, and when they're out of possession they're really hard to break down.

“I don't think there's going to be many spaces between the lines so we're going to have to move the ball really quickly and make sure we defend aggressively as well. They’re incredibly good at set pieces but they've just got a real edge and intensity about their play.

“I think they create a lot of chances in terms of when the opposition are sloppy and try and play into areas where they want you to play, I think that's what they're waiting for and then to bring their counter attacks.

“I've just mentioned set pieces but I think we've just got to move the ball quickly, we've got to try and dominate the centre, whether that's playing through the centre or around or over quickly, we've just got to try and create two v ones and overloads the best we possibly can and then enter the box, which we struggled to do at the weekend. We’ve been trying to focus on ways to improve our goal scoring chances.

“We dominated parts of the game in the first half on Saturday but we didn't enter the final third with enough quality and then we were disappointed in our response after the goal. Our focus this week has been on scoring goals and we hope to do that more effectively.

We then asked Mike about the new players in the squad: “I think the recruitment that we've done, we've tried to bring players in who fit the way we want to play.

“But ultimately we've brought in lads from higher leagues on loan and players that have played in a higher league, so that comes with its own pressures. I think that they know the situation, they came in with their eyes wide open, we were very upfront and honest.

“We've got every belief that we'll get out of this situation but we really need to grind and manufacture that good feeling because it's difficult when you're at this end of the table and you're fighting for everything you can get.”

Mike then spoke about whether playing away from home lessens the pressure: “ I think when you go into a team in form, you go into a well-organised team and the situation in the table and the pressure we put on ourselves is high. So I think going away from home, maybe we might feel that we can go and have a go, but for us the pressure comes from within and we know how important the result is.”

Mike then spoke about the sold out away end at Fleetwood on Saturday: “It's been phenomenal from day one coming here, home and away. When they get behind you it's incredible.

“The away fans have just been faultless, it's been amazing. So we’re looking forward to that.”

Onto injuries, Mike initially spoke about Terell Thomas and Ethan Robson: “They should both be involved as long as they have a clean week this week barring any setbacks, touch wood. They should be able to be involved in some capacity.

“Callum Guy hasn’t been out on the grass but he's been coming in so there's been a remarkable improvement, he's just really trying to build his load up in the gym.

“Paul Dummett had to just go and get checked over after his accident but he's been fine, he's trained fully this week.”

On the addition of Josh Williams, he said: “He’ll add pace and power to our attack in terms of threatening the back line, I think that's priceless and especially for ourselves when we are finding it hard to break teams down.

“We need that outlet and he brings that so we were really happy to be able to get that done and I think he's going to add a lot of excitement. We need to make sure that we look forward and try and get him behind and get balls in the box.”

On whether any further additions are to be expected, he said: “We've got a few areas that plates are spinning. We'll see the players that want to play and have more game time.

“We've got our targets if certain things drop but at the moment we know we've got a healthy squad. If any bodies do leave the building then we'll be looking to respond very quickly.”

On Kadeem Harris’ contract situation, he said: “I hope we are getting closer, I know Rob's speaking every day with the agent and fingers crossed but nothing to report on yet.

We then asked the head coach for an update on the situation with Luke Armstrong and Jack Robinson: “Jack is still just to make a decision. I think he's got options so it's just down to him and his representatives to make that decision.

“Luke isn’t as simple. He wants more game time but also he fully respects the situation and his deal here, and likewise we want the best for him. We'll only allow him to leave if the situation is right for ourselves in terms of bringing someone else in, but at the moment it's just ongoing dialogue.”

And ahead of Saturday’s game, we asked the gaffer for his message to the fans: “The support has been phenomenal, especially Saturday after the game. Of course it a disappointing result, but I think there was a lot of positives to take in the first half.

“It's going to take a small amount of time, I hope, because we haven't got that as a luxury. The support has been phenomenal and we just have to come together and give it as best we can, which I know they will.”
