MATCH REPORT: MORECAMBE 1-2 UNITED

.

Freddie O’Donoghue’s first senior strike combined with Ben Williams’ close range finish saw the Blues emerge victorious in Morecambe.

Mike Williamson made ten changes to his side that won at Salford City - Luke Armstrong being the only player to remain in the line-up.

Young forward Freddie O’Donoghue levelled the score with his first touch after entering the action before Ben Williams’ close range strike three minutes later confirmed victory.

Jake Allan - who opened his Carlisle encounter against Wigan in a previous Bristol Street Motors Trophy fixture - created the first opening after a driving run down the right, he looked to find Armstrong but the ball was turned behind for a corner.

Kadeem Harris showed brilliant skill down United’s left soon after, flicking the ball beyond Ross Millen, prior to the ball finding its way to Sam Hetherington, whose powerful low attempt went off target.

Saturday’s hero Ben Barclay counted himself lucky on 11 minutes after being caught in possession - the hosts were unable to take advantage of the brilliant chance on the break.

On 16 minutes, Hallam Hope broke the deadlock after another situation came up, similar to the one previously mentioned. Barclay had the ball stolen from him inside United’s area and Hope made no mistake from close range.

Near the 20-minute mark, Shrimps’ 16-year-old debutant, Nathan Snowball, came close to doubling their lead but was unable to get a good connection on the ball following a cross from the right.

On 32 minutes, Morecambe had another fine effort in front of Harry Lewis’ goal. Harvey Macadam opted to send the ball to Hope on his right and the attacker lashed wide from a tight angle.

Two minutes later, Luke Armstrong came agonisingly close to restoring parity for the visitors at the opposite end. Jack Robinson played a looping ball over the top to Harris, who sent the ball into the box and after it finally fell for the forward, his shot was deflected wide.

Shortly before the break, the ball fell nicely to Paul Lewis following a corner, but the Shrimps’ man blasted over.

HALF-TIME: Morecambe 1-0 United

The opening ten minutes of the second-half provided little to no chances for either side as both teams attempted to take control.

After being introduced at the break, Ben Williams found himself flying down the Blues’ left, before playing a ball inside which fell to Hetherington, whose shot landed just wide of Burgoyne’s post.

On 59 minutes, the Shrimps’ shot-stopper made a tremendous double save, denying Taylor Charters from distance before making a brilliant reaction save from point-blank range to prevent Armstrong from levelling proceedings.

The game entered a lull in the ten minutes that followed, before Gwion Edwards forced Harry Lewis into a top save.

Jonah Lowes made his first team debut on 74 minutes, with Freddie O’Donoghue joining the action alongside him

O’Donoghue would then level the score with his first touch almost immediately. Ben Williams’ cross from the left found the youngster, who slammed home from close range.

Williams would go from creator to scorer three minutes later, latching onto a delivery from the right and tapping home to give the Cumbrians the lead.

The hosts’ substitute Adam Lewis delivered a fine low cross which no teammate was able to connect with, before unleashing his own effort moments later, forcing Lewis into a strong stop.

Edwards continued to probe and looked to find Morecambe’s way back level in the closing moments but his final chance went into the side netting of Lewis’ goal.
