The Blues fell to a disappointing defeat on the road in the capital.
Matty Stevens broke the deadlock with a header, prior to turning home his second from point-blank range, before Cameron Harper’s own goal made it three before the break.
The hosts started the second-half as strong as they ended the first, and it was Matty Stevens once again, adding his third from close range at the far post following a cross, making it four to the hosts.
The first five minutes provided very little in terms of clear cut chances - the closest United came was on the counter from one of the hosts’ corners.
Two minutes later, it was Wimbledon who opened the scoring, Matty Stevens nodded home from inside the area after they got their following corner correct in terms of delivery.
On 12 minutes, James Tilley came extremely close to extending their advantage from a free-kick, but it was turned behind for a corner, which was then cleared by the Blues.
Following this, Harrison Neal had the visitors’ first shot on goal of the day, which was then blocked and cleared following a mazy run down the left from Jon Mellish.
Close to the 20-minute mark, there was a stoppage due to the referee picking up an injury. One of the assistant referees became referee, whilst the fourth official replaced the linesman.
Omar Bugiel should’ve almost certainly added a second for the hosts just prior to the half-hour mark. Alistair Smith showed some great control in the middle third, before finding the forward, who chopped beyond Mellish and cannoned his opportunity over the crossbar.
On 39 minutes, the hosts doubled their advantage. Smith struck a powerful low effort from distance which forced Harry Lewis to palm the ball away and Stevens was alert to bundle home his and Wimbledon’s second of the afternoon.
One minute before the break, United were lucky Wimbledon didn’t add a third through Maycock, before Myles Hippolyte also struck wide.
The Blues’ luck did run out soon after though as their opponents found their third in stoppage time at the end of the first-half.
HALF-TIME: AFC Wimbledon 3-0 United
Five minutes into the second-half, Wimbledon scored their fourth. Steven was free at the far post to convert his third of the day to complete his hat-trick.
On 59 minutes, the Dons almost added a fifth as they delivered a free-kick from the right towards the far post, Lewis managed to climb highest and punch clear the danger.
Callum Guy and Taylor Charters both made their return to league action on 63 minutes, replacing Dominic Sadi and Josh Vela, respectively.
Ben Barclay came close to pulling one back for Carlisle on 70 minutes, but after initially making an error, shot-stopper Owen Goodman managed to claim low at his near post.
Soon after, Mellish found himself in a position to fire at goal, his effort flew low beyond the far post, before substitute Joe Piggott had the ball in the net at the opposite end on 80 minutes, but the referee disallowed the goal due to a foul in the build-up.
On 84 minutes, Guy looked to find a consolation for the Blues from distance on the volley, which ultimately flew over Goodman’s crossbar.
