MARK HUGHES SPEAKS FOLLOWING MK DONS DRAW

.

Following this evening's draw at Brunton Park against MK Dons, we spoke to Mark Hughes.

Speaking to CUTV, he said: "We showed great character tonight, I have to say. Went behind twice from our point of view, not great goals. They didn't have to work too hard for them and could have been avoided, but I thought our response after that was excellent.

"First-half,I thought we really just dusted ourselves down and went for it. And second-half, more of the same, they had a little spell where we just lost a little bit of energy. So, we got fresh lads on and turned it around towards the end, [and we] could have won it.

"From my point of view, really, really proud of the performance. I don't think the team would have had the ability to come back a few months ago, but they're a different group now. Their belief, that's what they were lacking. Confidence to do what we talk about and we had a game plan in terms of what they were going to do.

"They want you to press and go out of shape and then they pick you off. But for the most part, I thought we were really solid in terms of our shape and what we wanted to do."

Speaking on the goals the Blues conceded, Mark said "It's a little bit difficult. I understand that sometimes decisions in football are difficult to make. I accept that. Sometimes you press when you shouldn't. There's an issue you have to get up to the ball sometimes and then you make individual errors as well and you look back and think, well, those goals could have been avoided.

"It's football, it's sport, these things happen and it's your reaction after them. And I thought our reaction after them was fantastic."

On Matty Dennis' display, Hughes said: " thought his energy was good for us. Got a few bangs and stuck at it. He's doing really well for us at the moment."

"I thought we were excellent in terms of our general play and to move the ball quickly and go in good areas and get the ball in the box.

"Probably guilty of not getting the ball in the box as often with as much quality in the second-half."

On the referee's display, the gaffer stated: "I was a little disappointed with some of the decision-making. I thought certainly the last period, 10-15 minutes to go, I didn't think we had the rub of the green or the correct decisions made.

"If I'm honest, we forced the issue trying to ask questions of them."

Speaking on United's squad, Mark said: "I don't think we can criticise them at all. I think the effort and the application that they've shown, yeah, there will always be individual errors, that happens. But in terms of a performance, I was really proud of what they produced and it could have been very easy to capitulate, but that's not what we do now."

On the late triple change, he said: "We just needed a little bit more energy in there, so we made that change and we went again in that last period. So yeah, overall, I'm pleased with the performance.

"We would have loved three points tonight, didn't get that, but it's another point. We're off the bottom for the first time, I think, since before Christmas, so we'll take that as a positive and then, yeah, we've got games to come."

Finally, on the fans, Hughes said: "I thought they were great tonight once again, but I always say that because it's the truth. I thought they really got behind us. I'm jumping about and trying to get them going, but they didn't need my help today."
