MARK HUGHES SPEAKING AFTER THE GILLINGHAM DRAW

MARK HUGHES

Following today’s draw against Gillingham, we spoke to Mark Hughes.

Speaking to CUTV, he said: “We're getting in situations in the game where we can take it away from the opposition and those key moments and those opportunities that we've been able to create, we just need to take.

“Another decent performance against a team that this year is really difficult to break down and conditions were a little bit difficult.

“The wind didn't really help us, too many straight balls and easier to defend by just allowing the ball to go out of play.

“We felt in the second-half we'd have more of the play just in terms of being able to keep the ball on the park and create some good chances.

“We're still having to change the team around, change the personnel just because everybody's at different fitness levels and we know guys can't complete 90 minutes so we've got to get our timing right.

“We've still got to try and affect the game so I think we tried a different couple of formations, certainly the first one we played with the diamond because we felt that would obviously get our creative plays in the middle of the park which we've got plenty of but I think conditions really affected that idea. So later on in the game once again we've really forced the issue and could have won it at the end so it's given me food for thought and in terms of the lads that can do the job that I'm asking them to do and maintain their form from the first minute to the last.

“Other guys have obviously come in, they haven’t had a lot of football, like Callum Guy and Archie Davies, equipped themselves really well but then you know you're going to have to change just to keep the energy in the team so hopefully we've brought them on a little bit and they'll be ready to have more minutes next time out.”

“We're doing the right work clearly, we just need to get that break, we need somebody just to put their foot through it.

“I said it last time, I've said it again today and it's frustrating I have to say, it's frustrating for the lads because I thought performance-wise, I thought they'd give everything once again which is all we can ask in fairness but we just need that little bit of clarity of thought right in the key moments whether it be getting the shot off with good power and good strength or picking the right pass if somebody else is in a better position to have a clear shot and it's just getting those moments and those decisions within the game, getting them correctly.

“Decision making is huge in football we know that and the more decisions you get correct the better your performance can be so we've got to improve that aspect of our play but overall can't complain about the energy and the effort the lads showed, we've just got to be a little bit more clinical now than we've been able to show at the moment.

“We need wins, we know that, that's why we're throwing everything at it, we're trying to change personnel later on in games just to mix it up and on another day we could have got the reward for that but I think it's important that they keep on believing and that's certainly what I sense in the group that they're totally on board, they're giving everything and if we keep our performance levels high which they have been in my view, the wins will come.

“We've just got to realise that those wins need to start hopefully next week.

“We've got an opportunity so we've got to keep going, keep showing the effort, keep showing the willingness to work really hard in the week to take on the information that myself and Glyn have given them and let's see where it takes us.

“I've got good players here, I've got players that want to make it happen, we just need that break at the right time and I sense that if we get that then we'll be off and running.”

Speaking on the appointment of Jamie Devitt as first team coach, Mark said: “Jamie's been good in and around the dressing room, he knows the club very, very well.

“He's got good energy which I mentioned before. I just wanted to change the dynamic of the staff room to give us that energy here off the field as well as on it.”

On the fans, Hughes said: “We were really trying to push to get that winner that we all want and once again they got behind us so we just want to give them what they need which is wins and draws are okay but wins are the order of the day so we've got to start winning.”
