LUKE ARMSTRONG SPEAKS FOLLOWING SWINDON TOWN VICTORY

ARMSTRONG

After our win against Swindon Town, we spoke to forward Luke Armstrong.

Analysing the contest, he said: “It was a real big fight out there. We know we've got lots of things to work on, but considering we've only had two days with the new gaffer and we put to practice some of the things he wanted us to do and we've done it well in spells.

“Great result, exactly what we needed, but still need some work on the performance, but we can go away with our heads held high because of how hard we battled and how hard we worked for that win.

“The lads all really bought into what the gaffer wants us to do and yeah, the new members of staff that come in have been great and we really want to put a good shift in for them and do everything we can to get us up that league.”

Earlier this week, Mike Williamson was appointed United’s new Head Coach - a familiar face for Luke after the attacker played alongside him at Gateshead.

“It's great to have that understanding of what they want. I know a lot of lads who have played under him and they couldn't speak highly enough of him and yeah, it's been a great first few days and yeah, we just want to buy into what he wants to do and work on all the stuff that will get us wins.

“It’s great when you've played with someone before and they’ve put me straight in the team and backed me, that's great.

“It just gives me a good boost and thankfully I repaid them by getting a goal and hopefully that's me kicking on now.”

Armstrong netted the Blues’ second goal on 72 minutes, prodding home from close range following a scramble in the Swindon area.

“I don't really know what happened at the start.

“I think Chaz (Charlie Wyke) headed it back across and it just kind of fell down. Dom had a shot. It might have been a pass. He did say it was like a half-shot, half-pass to me. It just kind of fell, took a touch and just hit it on the swivel and it took its time to go in like, but thankfully it did and I was over the moon.

“I didn't know where to run at first. I was all over the place, didn't know if the ref would give it, but yeah, it was great to go over to the fans and give them something to celebrate.”

Saturday’s clash at Swindon was quite the battle for Mike Williamson’s side, standing firm at the back in the opening exchanges of each half, before going on to control proceedings and find both goals in the latter stages of each.

Speaking on the game in further detail, the attacker said: “We had spells, doing what we wanted to do and it looked really good and we had spells where we had to manage the game.

“Obviously, it's a tough place to come here. They've got a good crowd, good support and yeah, they really backed them and I thought, to be fair, they did cause us some problems, but we just rode it out and we defended for our lives out there and yeah, managed to keep that clean sheet and get rewarded on the other end as well."

Next weekend, United welcome Grimsby Town to Brunton Park on the back of a first full working week under the new coaching team.

“I was over the moon when they were appointed. I'm delighted to really get going with them and I've got high hopes for the season now. I think we'll really kick on and yeah, I can't wait for the next game now.”

Finally, we touched on the brilliant travelling support, Armstrong stated: “They're always outstanding and as I say, I'm delighted to give them something to cheer for once.

“I believe the gaffer is going to bring us more joy and more joy for the fans, it's time to kick on now.”
