GEORGIE KELLY SPEAKING AHEAD OF THE TRIP TO MORECAMBE

GEORGIE KELLY

We spoke to Georgie Kelly ahead of our trip to Morecambe.

Speaking to CUTV, Georgie began by looking back at the 3-2 win over Newport:

“it was a big result. We needed it. Hopefully it builds a bit of confidence now in the group.
These next few weeks are do or die, so fingers crossed now we can go in and back it up on Saturday.”

On the belief and fightback shown, as the Blues came from 2-0 down, Georgie said:

“I would rather win it at a canter. But, yeah, it did show that not all is lost. There is still a little bit of bite and a bit of belief there somewhere.

“It's just about finding it and, as I say, capitalising and putting everything together for Saturday. It's obviously a big ask to get out from where we are.”

We asked Georgie if it was just about focusing on ourselves, rather than looking out for results elsewhere, he responded:

“I don't even know the results of the previous games from Saturday. I know maybe a few did, but no matter what, we're going to have to win the majority of our games. As you say, it's a big ask.
The season obviously hasn't gone to plan for a number of reasons, but we feel like it's still in our hands to an extent if we can win the majority of these. That'll be the target, not looking at anyone else.”

Georgie netted twice in the Newport victory, and was also voted as MOTM. We asked how it felt to open his account for the club, he said:

“It's been a long time coming. I've had a bit of a nightmare here. To be honest, it was more the ability to last and play 90 minutes.

“It was about performance rather than goals. Goals are very technical and I wouldn't be reliant on goals to validate a performance. I would probably be more happy with minutes.

“But yeah, it is nice. It eases things. It's nice when you've been out for so long and have had so many issues.

“It definitely was a bit of a relief. Hopefully I can build on that. To be honest, the results are the only thing that mattered in the end.

“Otherwise, it would have been irrelevant. I'm positive enough.”

It’s been a tough time at the club for Georgie, a point he makes no secret of. We asked him if he felt he was over the hurdle now, he answered:

“Yeah, I think so. I hope so.

“It's been complicated. It's the same issue all the time, the same calf. But I spoke to experts from all over the world.

“We spoke to everyone. The club's been great, in fairness, in trying to figure it out. It's pretty complicated.

“But I do think we've kind of hit the nail on the head now. And a lot of it is being very cautious now around the reintroduction, and to try to build volume over a long period of time. So we have been fairly cautious.

“And I hope that the work that we figured out and done means that I'm over this issue. This has actually been my only kind of issue throughout my career that I've ever had, the calf. I've never had any other injuries.

“But it's just that these have been so prominent over the last couple of years. So, yeah, I'm hoping now, touch wood, that I'm over the worst bit and we've figured it out.”

On the trip to Morecambe, Georgie said:

“They're all must-wins now. We're in a good place.

“We've had a good enough week there in training and confidence is high. So I'm hopeful we can go and put another performance together.

“It's probably been a while since we've put back-to-back performances, never mind wins, together.

“As I say, it's still an extremely uphill task in terms of where we are. There's a load of different moving parts and variables. As I said, we can go and win Saturday and maybe create a bit of pressure on someone else for a change.

“But I think the most important thing is momentum. Momentum in this game is massively undervalued. We've seen the brunt of it in terms of the negative sides, in terms of this year.

“We came into this season off the back of a poor season last year and then it carried through.

“And then that negativity steamrolls, even psychologically. So it would be nice to buck the trend and put a couple of wins together and see where that takes us.

“Everyone knows we have the ability, we have the players. It's just getting things to click, hopefully. It would be nice to see it now.”

Finally, on the brilliant support of the fans, as United are set to be backed by around 1,700 fans tomorrow, Georgie said:

“The club is extremely well supported. It's a fantastic club. That's why it's kind of so sad to see us in the situation we're in.

“I can't actually believe it, to be honest. But they've been great. In terms of the support base, it’s amazing.

“I've never seen anything like it. In terms of away support, it's been incredible. So, yeah, as I said, we've got 1,600 or 1,700 this weekend which will be a bit of a boost for us as well, going there. So, fingers crossed.”
