Carlisle United Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of Callum Whelan on a two-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee from Gateshead FC.
Callum, 26, began his career with Manchester United. He featured in their under-18s and under-23s before making a move to Watford.
He only had a short spell with the Hornets, making just two appearances in the 2019/20 campaign. Watford were a Premier League side that season, but Callum’s appearances came in the FA Cup.
After that, Whelan made the switch to Oldham Athletic, where he went on to make 89 appearances between August 2020 and July 2022.
He then made the switch to Solihull Moors and made 24 appearances for the club. During this time he also went on loan to Gateshead in February 2023, before making the move permanent in the summer of the same year.
Callum arrives after playing 63 times for the Heed. His time there saw him work alongside Mike Williamson, and he also added a goal threat to his game, netting 13 times across two seasons.
Head Coach, Mike Williamson said: "Cal is someone we’ve been after for a while, he brings energy, hunger and a high level of technical ability. He’s a great lad who will fit straight in and improve us instantly."
Sporting Director, Rob Clarkson said: "We are delighted to have completed the signing of Callum Whelan from Gateshead FC for an undisclosed fee.
"Callum is a technically gifted player who can play anywhere in midfield. He has been one of the best players in the National League during his time with Gateshead, so we are really pleased he has chosen to join Carlisle United.
"Callum will go straight into our squad and is available for the game against Tranmere this weekend.
"We thank Gateshead for their cooperation during negotiations and for allowing us to get this deal done early in the window."
