AARON HAYDEN SPEAKS AFTER SALFORD CITY WIN

.

We spoke to Aaron Hayden, after our victory at Salford.

He began with his thoughts on a big three points: “Great result today for the boys. I'm delighted for everyone involved. Delighted for the club.

"It’s a tough place to come. And we came in with a goal of getting three points and we achieved that and now it's on to next week.

“The signs have been there, it's just about getting the results now.

“We've been really resolute. You know, we took a good Wigan team over 100 minutes without scoring, so we should have had more goals ourselves. I think that's where we can be more critical of ourselves.

“But we got our goal in the end today. We were very good at the back and we defended as a team, which is the most important. It's not just about the 11 players on the pitch.

“Barcs [Ben Barclay] came on and scored the winning goal and he wasn't involved, but he still had the right mindset to be engaged and ready to have an effect on the game, which is what it's all about. And yeah, really delighted for him."

Aaron spoke about the mood in the dressing room: “It's a great feeling, it's nice when you put in a good shift and you come away with what you want. Football's not always like that, you don't always get what you want in this game. So yeah, buzzing to get what we wanted today."

It was never going to be an easy game; with Salford in great form and unbeaten in five.

“I had no idea. I took it as a normal game. I didn't know where they were in the league before.

“II asked someone on the bench when I came off, like, where are they in the league, 12th? But yeah, they're a very good team.

“They've got their processes and yeah, it was a tough game. We had to work for it.

“Gabe made some really good saves in the first-half, but in the second-half I think we came on more. We had a few clear-cut chances that we could have done better with. I had one myself.

"We really stuck to it and believed in the process today and buzzing for everyone. Even the fans, most importantly, that made the travel down today.

“It was great at the back today. We were all communicating, talking and when I look across and see who I'm playing with, I know that they've got the experience and the desire and know how to get clean sheets.

"Really buzzing with the boys at the back today. And that's just on the players as well.”

On the 1,300 United fans backing them, Aaron said: "They were phenomenal today. You know, when you hear your fans roar, wherever you may be, it always gives you a burst of energy. You feel their energy come across the pitch and go into your legs and we needed that today.

“They gave it to us and they got their reward. So really happy and thank you to the fans for sticking with us today.”

The Blues matched Salford physically, and always looked a threat from set-plays. Aaron himself had a good opportunity, which he talked to us about: “I should score, really. I can't lie.

“My calves were failing me. I was starting to cramp up. Maybe if I wasn’t cramping, I would have got there.

“But no, no excuses. It was a great ball and on another day, I stick that right in. Barcs made up for it.

"It's a great sub from the gaffer, you know. If he didn't take me off today, we probably would have had a nil-nil.

“So it's a great sub and I'm so happy Barcs. He came on and he had the fresh legs to go and put himself in there and score.”

On next week, when United head to Bromley with another sold-out away end, Aaron said: “It's all focus now.

"After today, we take this out of our minds and all of our focus is on having a good week's training, focusing on next week and what we've got to do and turning up with the same mentality to go and put on a great performance and hopefully the result takes care of itself.”
