Manager Paul Simpson spoke to us ahead of the trip to Leyton Orient.
“Leyton Orient are on a good run,” he said. “They’re a good side, they’ve got a very settled group, only a few changes, and a very settled style of play.
“It’s going to be tough but we’re finding every game in League One tough at the moment. We’ve got to go there with a clear plan of what we want to do, a freshness about us, the players have been bright in training this week and I want to see it on Saturday, I want to see us go to Orient and start the game positively, and maybe go and get that first goal which we’ve been striving to do.
“Although we’ve been striving for it, we haven’t been able to get that first goal. I’ve got to pick a side that I believe will be attack minded, that will go and be positive.
“It may surprise some people the team I am going to select on Saturday, no doubt it will be the wrong team in some people’s minds, but I am going to try and win this game and I’m going to pick a side that gives us an opportunity and I think the best opportunity to win.
“The truth of it is after 29 games, we haven’t got the results we wanted, but we’re going into the next game with the belief that we’ve got enough to cause problems and get a result.
“We have to keep believing and keep working. There are enough games left – with 17 to go, there’s enough points to play for. The sooner we get winning the better. A draw’s no good. We’ve got to be front footed, full steam ahead and let’s see where it takes us. The gap that we've got between ourselves and safety isn't going to get any smaller if we don't win games.”
“The league table is horrible,” he admitted. “All we can look at now is trimming the squad if something comes up. We can still bring in free agents if there’s anybody out there. And that’s something we’ll continue to do. The likelihood is this is the squad we’ll be working with, and this squad has to do everything we can to get wins on the board that gets us climbing up the table.”
With over 600 tickets already sold, Simpson commented on the fantastic support from the fans: “It reminds me of that first game back here. There was only 15 games to go, we’ve got two extra on this little run.
“The fans turned out in their numbers that day and I was really pleasantly surprised, that fan base has just grown over the time I’ve been here.
“We have to do something to keep them with us. we’ve got to do something on Saturday that keeps them smiling, cheering, shouting, and puts them in a real positive frame of mind to send them home, and hopefully with three points in the bag.”
