PREVIEW: Bolton

Bolton Wanderers v Carlisle United, Saturday 7 October, kick off 3pm

Third in the table with back-to-back league wins under their belts, it's a confident side that will be hosting the Blues this weekend.

The season started with emphatic wins over Lincoln, Cheltenham and Fleetwood, but they were brought back down to earth with a bump when they were beaten 4-0 at home by Wigan.

They unexpectedly lost at Reading in September, but last month was otherwise fruitful with two wins and a draw to add seven more points to the tally.

Last weekend saw them overcome a spirited tussle with Stevenage, thanks to a late Josh Sheehan winner, and former Blue Jack Iredale was also on the scoresheet. Gethin Jones (suspended) and Kyle Dempsey are the other familiar faces we can expect to see.

The summer transfer window threw up an interesting situation when midfielder George Thomason opted to stay with Wanderers despite a bid from another club being accepted.

The 22-year-old was reportedly a target for Championship side Bristol City, having scored two goals in 74 games for his current club.

Barrow-born Thomason joined Bolton in January 2020 having enjoyed spells at Blackpool and Longridge Town.

Dion Charles is on one of those runs all strikers dream of.

Eight goals in 13 appearances in all competitions have played a big part in Bolton's early season form.

He has three from his last four outings, a by-product of having had a huge amount of shots - 23 so far.

That tells us he'll go for it if given half a sniff.

Striker Eoin Doyle scored the only goal of the game the last time we were in Bolton back in April 2021.

The highlights from that game are here:

The first meeting of these teams for over 30 years was at Brunton Park on Boxing Day in 2020 ... and what a game it turned out to be.

Weather conditions were beyond awful, but the Blues came out of the traps quickly to establish a three-goal lead courtesy of strikes from Aaron Hayden, Lewis Alessandra and Omari Patrick.

George Thomason nabbed one back just before the break, and Bolton clawed their way back into it to earn a point courtesy of goals in the last five minutes from Nathan Delfouneso and Peter Kioso (who was subsequently sent off).
