The red card for keeper Jokull Andresson on Saturday has opened the door for a return for Tomas Holy on Tuesday night, with Gabe Breeze set for a place on the bench.
“He knows he’ll get his chance and it’s up to him now,” manager Paul Simpson said. “If he comes in and performs then that’s exactly what we want from him.
“I thought he did well when he came on, I don’t think he had a lot of chance with either of the goals, the second one’s right in the corner and a good finish from Vokes.
“He kicked well, handled things well, he’s a presence, and I’ve got to say, since I left him out, he was very disappointed when I spoke to him, he’s trained fantastic, he seems to be more vocal in training and more chatty, for whatever reason.
“I had a conversation with him this week where I told him he just has to keep doing what he’s doing and wait for that opportunity. I didn’t expect it to come about like it did, but he thinks he should be playing and this is his chance.
“He’s got to carry on doing what he has done in the last few weeks and make sure he grabs it with both hands. What has to have happened is that he has to have learned from his time out.
“I explained to him why he wasn’t in the team when I left him out. But I had the conversation with him this week, I think he’s done really well in training since he got left out. His levels have shot up, not his work ethic because that has always been absolutely top drawer, he’s a top professional.
“I’ve been really pleased with what he’s shown me over the last few weeks – more talking, he’s been communicating with players in training, which he wasn’t doing before. I’ve seen a different side to Tomas over the last few weeks.
“He has to continue to show that, he has to come back into the team, he has to dominate his box as a 6ft however many inch goalkeeper he is, he has to get his kicking right and he has to make saves.
“If he does that, that’s why I brought him to the club because I thought he could do that and I want him to continue to do that.”
“As for Jokull, he has to pick himself up and learn from it,” he continued. “I’ll say it again, it’s a bad mistake, but it’s gone now, Tomas has got an opportunity and it’s up to him to keep hold of it.
“Jokull didn’t say anything after the game, he was very quiet, obviously disappointed. He didn’t need to say anything, we all know what happened, it’s a mistake. Tomas has been telling me he wants to get back in the team, Jokull’s given him an opportunity, and it’s up to Tomas to hold onto it.”
