United’s #10for10 ticket promotion for the Tranmere Rovers game is targeting an attendance of 10,000 home fans as the exciting end-of-season run-in really starts to kick in.
And manager Paul Simpson was more than happy, once again, to talk about the backing his team is getting at this crucial stage.
“The support from the fans and businesses around the city at the moment is brilliant,” he said. “I go back to last February and I keep saying it, but the whole feeling towards the football club since then has been brilliant.
“People have supported us vocally and financially, which is brilliant, and it’s what will help us move forward.
“We’ve still got lots of challenges ahead, but if everybody can stick together and remain positive then hopefully we can make it a really good end to the season.”
“The players have responded really well to having good numbers of supporters behind us already this season,” he continued. “If you earn the right to be up the top of the table that comes with getting more fans watching you, and that’s what we all want.
“It’s definitely what I wanted as a kid, I wanted to be in full stadiums with positive crowds, and that’s what we want this weekend. A positive crowd which becomes more positive because of our performance. If we do that we’ll all have a good day.
“As we keep saying, our part of it is to give them something to shout about. They’re coming to see us do well, they’re not coming to watch us play badly.
“We want to do well for them and encourage them to come back for the next one. I know there is the excellent promotional work for the Tranmere game, and we’ve got some big games before that as well.
“We need the supporters for all of them. I think we’ve got good numbers going to Bradford, and I’m sure it’ll be the same at Gillingham and Orient.
“Let’s get Stevenage dealt with first, we want the performance, atmosphere and result to be right, then the next one will take care of itself.”
