Striker Ryan Edmondson made it two goals in two games when he netted in the closing stages of the Saturday friendly at the Gateshead International Arena and it was a reward for the hard work he’d out in throughout the 90 minutes.
“He’ll take confidence from the fact that he scored a goal, and the lads overall can take confidence from the win they got from the game,” assistant manager Gav Skelton said.
“Strikers want to score goals and you’ve got to feel good when you do. He got into a good area and we’re always talking to him about staying central, because we want him to be a central striker.
“We want him in that six-yard box. We were a little bit critical in the first half because he was hanging outside the area for a cutback, or whatever, and we think that as a number nine and a goalscorer you need to be between the sticks.”
“He’ll feel good for getting two in two games,” he added. “Strikers pride themselves on goals, that’s their job, even in training they get frustrated when they don’t score.
“We keep telling Ryan to keep playing as a central striker, get in goalscoring areas and that’s what can happen. Thankfully he’s done that and he got his reward at the end of the game.
“He’s got all the raw attributes of doing it, the raw materials, but it’s taking information on board and making sure you keep doing what you’re doing.
“We have to keep shouting every time, to get in the box, and that’s where he’s going to make his money and progress in his career.
“The goals he’s got this week were fairly similar. He’s in between the sticks again, six-yard line, and he’s scored twice because of it. He should have had another against Livingston if he’d stayed onside.
“If he keeps doing these things and sees the benefit, hopefully there are more goals coming from him.”
