INTERVIEW: We're keen to add to it

The arrival of Dan Butterworth on Friday made it six summer signings for the Blues, and assistant manager Gav Skelton confirmed this weekend that work continues on adding more in the coming weeks.

“It’s ongoing,” he said. “You hope it’ll happen and we’re definitely looking for players. There’s a lot of work going on with the gaffer and his recruitment staff and sometimes you think you’re there, and sometimes it’s disappointing because it’s all gone cold.

“We’ve got a couple in, there’s no rush, but we are keen to add to it. With Dan coming in at the end of the week it was really pleasing in training on Friday to hear the buzz and noise around the group.

“There was a lot of communication during the session, and it wasn’t just shouting, it was good interactions amongst the players. Me and the gaffer didn’t have to shout, it was them leading it.

“That’s really pleasing. We’ve spoken about this before, we need as many leaders in the team as possible because that builds its own type of spirit. Hopefully that will help us to have a successful season.

“We didn’t use Dan on Saturday because he hasn’t done loads. He did a bit of work before the game, and he’ll start to step up from here.”

Part of the stepping up mentioned is a week in Scotland on a team bonding and training camp.

“It’s quality time together and it does bond people,” he told us. “I know it’s football cliches but people can say it’s a good group, and that can be a generic thing that people trot out.

“New lads say it, and those who have just left say it as well, but this is a good group and it was one of the major contributing factors to what happened last year.

“The team spirit and togetherness helped with the consistency we saw last season and we want more of the same for the season coming up.

“The work we do up at St Andrews will be quite intense. It’s a good chance to get some double sessions sorted, that will be good.

“They might get a bit of time together but there will be no social evening or anything. They might get an afternoon off where they can perhaps get a game of golf.

“We’ll also get a training game, a really competitive game, and that will also be good. It’ll be a decent week, everyone together, and we’re all looking forward to it.”
