The end of last week saw teenager Jack Ellis sign a new deal and, as if that wasn’t enough, he made it an even more memorable few days when he smashed the opening goal of the game into the back of the net at Borough Park on Saturday afternoon.
“He did really well last year when he came into the team, he just got injured at disappointing times,” assistant manager Gav Skelton said. “It was good competition between him and Fin Back.
“It’s pleasing that he’s got his contract sorted. He’s getting stronger as pre-season goes along, sharper.
“It’s easy to say when he’s scored a goal and got assists, but we did say on the bench just before his goal that he was looking really at it and up for it. He was pressing high up the pitch, forcing mistakes.
“It’s definitely the best I’ve seen from him out of the three games so far, and that’s something for him to build on. He’s had a good week, and that’s football for you.
“He’s had to cope with an injury last season, but he’s come back, signed his new contract, got a goal the next day, and hopefully this is the start of really good things for him.”
