In-form striker Kris Dennis took his tally to 15 goals from just 26 appearances for the season, with three of those goals bagged in each of his last three outings.
His latest, the one that broke the deadlock against Newport on Saturday, was as neat a touch as you’ll see with a deft brush of the boot enough to send the ball over the line deep into time added on for the first period.
“It really was a great finish,” manager Paul Simpson agreed. “He worked his socks off up there on his own, he was absolutely brilliant.
“It was more of a lone role with the way we ended up switching things and he’s just a pest. He gets in people’s hair and he’s always in and around it when the ball is bobbling about inside the box.
“I’m delighted for him and he’s just got to keep it going. We want him to keep scoring goals and keep us going the way we are.”
On the quality of the finish, he said: “I don’t think anybody else in our team could have got that goal, but it’s the kind of thing he tales for granted.
“It’s a really good finish. It’s about having a calmness, an ability to know exactly where the goals are without even looking.
“The other pleasing thing was that it was a good bit of football. Probably the first time one of our wide players got an opportunity to face up and go against the wing-back or outside centre-back.
“Jordan Gibson put a cross in that they couldn’t quite clear, and Denno’s just a goalscorer. He gets himself into good areas.
“It’s a great reward for how hard he worked. Credit to him, it’s an incredible return to be on 15 goals at this stage of the season. He’s got to push himself to get 20, then 25, and see if we can get others close to him as well.”
