Manager Paul Simpson spoke ahead of Saturday’s trip to Blackpool at his Thursday press conference.
“We’ve got to move on from the Reading game and show that it wasn’t a true reflection of what this group is all about,” he said. “This is the first opportunity we have to show that so it’s a great game to look forward to.
“Blackpool are a good side, I watched them on Tuesday night in their trophy game against Barnsley. They made a lot of changes but played in a similar style to the way they usually play, they’re quite consistent with that.
“We know it’s going to be a tough game, they’re a side who have just come down from the Championship and they’re a club who will probably expect to be up in the top places and pushing for promotion again.
“We’ve got to make sure we do ourselves more justice and do better than we did at Reading. I believe we’ve got enough to cause them problems if we go and perform to the levels we’re capable of.
“They’ve got good players. We’ve got to make sure we go and stand up to the challenge. We believe we’ve got players who can compete in League One level but there’s no point in thinking it, we have to go and do it.
United will be backed by a sold-out away following of close to 2,000 fans at Bloomfield Road.
“It will be another brilliant away support,” the manager added. “I had a fantastic time at Blackpool and they’ve got really good supporters as well. I know we’ll have a fantastic backing, so we’ve got to go and put on a performance.
“The fans at Reading stuck with us even though we didn’t do anything to deserve that, so we’ve got to go to Blackpool and make sure we do ourselves justice.
“They’ve been fantastic, they really have. We’ve got to try and make it a similar sort of day to the day we had at Bolton when we went there. That was a brilliant day for the supporters.
“Saturday could be a brilliant day if we go and perform properly. But it all comes down to the football – we’ve got to perform right. They’re going for a day out at Blackpool but it will be a really good day if the football’s right.
“We have to go and work, compete, fight for first contact and second balls, and try and show the ability we’ve got. It’s a game we’re all looking forward to and hopefully we can keep the fans happy.”
